I don’t like the way he’s looking at you. I’m starting to think you want him too.

Jealous by Nick Jonas
A man doesn’t legitimately get jealous because his woman garners a little attention from a random dude.
Even with smooth vocals and ripped abs, Nick Jonas confesses his jealousy to his girlfriend because someone looked at her. Just looked at her. She didn’t flirt with him, didn’t strike up a convo. For real tho?
Let’s get on the same green-eyed monster page. Researchers in a sexual competition study define jealousy as a threat or loss of success in a relationship due to interference from a rival. Three kinds of jealousy are explained in a separate much-cited 2007 analysis:
- Reactive-a partner intentionally seeking out another for sex or flirtation
- Possessive-when one partner wants to keep the other to him or herself, not allowing the partner to meet others of the opposite sex. (Protective or possessive, yeah)
- Anxious-when the partner continually pictures the infidelity and thinks about their partner with another
These traits can appear in varying intensity and throughout different types of relationships such as dating, married, same gender, etc. Self-esteem is a key factor. According to Piercarlo Valdesolo, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Claremont McKenna College,
Men’s self-esteem is often linked to social status. When faced with a threat from a rival, men focus on the enemy’s attributes such as attractiveness, likability and profession.
Don’t take my word for it. Hear it straight from the mouths of Rebel and Josiah. The duo describes three personas: the Accuser, the Confronter and the Pushover.
A Chinese man strategically over feeds his girlfriend to make her unattractive to potential mates. Say what now?
And the epitome of good judgment and level-headedness, one Christopher Maurice Brown. Merely a photo of his ex Karrueche with model/actor Tyson Beckford sends Chris into a tailspin, with eloquent statements such as, “U wanna keep walking them runways. U need ta legs for that. Keep playing like I ain’t wit the bullshit.” This, from a man who cheated on Karrueche, publicly humiliated her, put her business on blast, fathered a baby outside their relationship, and drove her to fix her life with Iyanla.
Well, that settles it. Men absolutely get jealous over situations that aren’t even jealous-worthy. The male ego is fragile (psychologists are saying this not me). Hopefully, this little bit of insight into the male psyche can go a long way to help us crazy humans navigate relationships.
